February 2020
Chilean President Sebastian Pinera recently announced an ambitious US$5bn ‘Chile On Rails’ strategy with the aim of tripling ridership to 150 million passengers per year by 2027. Could the move bring the country’s relatively small network back into the spotlight?
The end of the decade sees an ending point for Horizon 2020, and so we explore what the EU’s flagship funding scheme has meant for rail through its numerous initiatives, including Roll2Rail, Shift2Rail, Green Rail.
We also explore the issues behind tackling rail fraud, after British train operating companies claimed in 2019 that anywhere between 10%-30% of compensation claims they pay out are fraudulent, and find out how Norway aims to be the first to create a single digital interlocking signalling system for its rail network.
Finally, we take a closer look at why carbon emissions at train stations are still too high; speak to Young Rail Professionals about their new project to spur rail recruitment; and highlight five ways that augmented reality is changing railway operations.
