Mer Mec buys Hitachi’s rail signalling businesses

Italian company Mer Mec has agreed to buy Hitachi’s signalling business in Germany, the UK and France. 550 employees will transfer to MerMec under the deal. 

The divestment is part of Hitachi Rail’s agreement with the EU competition authorities to ensure the Japanese-owned firm doesn’t hold a monopoly position in the European rail signals market. 

Systra acquires Rail Systems Australia

French transport consultancy group Systra has announced the acquisition of Rail Systems Australia. Systra is currently working on several significant projects in Australia and New Zealand. Rail Systems Australia concentrates on engineering, signalling and telecommunications across the rail sector and was established in Perth in 2017. It currently employs 130 people across its locations in Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne.

CN seals acquisition of Iowa Northern

Canadian National (CN) has finalised its acquisition of Iowa Northern Railway, a US railroad firm which runs 275 miles (440km) of railways, connecting the Canadian rail network with other CN assets in the US. CN said the deal creates a “single-line service to North American [freight] destinations.” Iowa Northern currently serves industry and agriculture in the Midwest US region.

Patriot Rail acquires Hydra following 10-year partnership

US-based rail transport firm Patriot Rail Company has announced the acquisition of Hydra Distribution & Rail Services and Hydra Transport to expand its operations, adding Hydra’s freight transportation services to its portfolio. The acquisition follows a 10-year partnership between the two companies on logistic solutions at Patriots Sacramento Valley Railroad in McClellan Park, California.
