Lightweight: Innovative: Sustainable

TRB Lightweight Structures is passionate about reducing weight in the transport industry with the ultimate goal of delivering a positive impact on the environment. This value is at the heart of our business, we believe in accountability and care how we affect the environment around us, both locally and globally.

About us

IRIS approved, TRB Lightweight Structures has over 60 years experience in the design and manufacturer of high-quality rail interiors, door leaves and detrainment systems. We work closely with our customers to design, build, test and validate products that can stand up to heavy usage over their long life. Our knowledge of both rail standards and requirements ensures a smooth development and approval process.

We pride ourselves in being able to advise and select the right materials for your project. Coupled with a strong understanding of manufacturability and cost, we are able to give a clear picture of the project from the start to finish.

We have extensive experience with both new build and refurbishment projects. Our products are in use in trains and transportation systems worldwide.

With state of the art painting facilities (approved by Trimite and Dupont), high-performance autoclave, 3 and 5 axis CNC machining centre and 3D modelling with FEA, we are well equipped to deliver all your interior requests to a high standard and in a timely manner.

Fully equipped products made with composite materials

TRB supplies a complete, fully equipped product, which is painted in its in-house facility and supplied ready-to-fit into the vehicle.

Rolling stock refurbishment and reverse engineering

TRB reverse-engineers physical parts by using equipment such as a Creaform Handyscan 700, which interfaces with the company's 3D modelling package. This lets TRB accurately produce 3D drawings whose originals do not exist or are incomplete.

Composite Door Leaves - The Next Generation

TRB has developed a new biocomposite resin based carbon fibre reinforced (CFRP) sandwich panel door leaf with a 100% recycled foam core. The door leaf gives the rail industry a sustainable, ‘green’ composite material option for carriage door leaves at a comparable cost to aluminium bonded door leaves, with a 35% weight saving. The composite structural system easily passes BS 6853 and BS 476 Part 7 Class 1a and is EN 45545 HL3 compliant.

Interior, exterior, detrainment, egress and cab security rail doors

We design, build, paint and assemble the operating mechanism, as well as install a wide variety of doors, ranging from simple hinge doors to complex, plug-slide doors and fold-out steps. In-house test rigs can accommodate various testing from load tests to simulated evacuation tests.
