10 March | signalling

Rolling stock manufacturer Hitachi Rail has secured a framework contract for the European Rail Transport Management System (ERTMS) digital signalling technology in Italy.

Under the €500m ($549m) contract, Hitachi Rail will design and deploy advanced digital signalling on 700km of rail lines across the country.

The new technology will be installed on rail lines in four regions, including nearly 480km of Sicily’s rail lines, as well as 150km in Umbria. This digital signalling system will also be implemented on 80km of the Roccasecca-Avezzano rail line in the Lazio and Abruzzo regions.

The ERTMS will integrate train control systems in different European countries to create a consistent railway system in Europe.

The system will also enable trains coming from neighbouring European nations to run on Italian lines without disruption.

Stagecoach accepts Inframobility’s $780m takeover offer

UK-based transport group Stagecoach has ditched its support for the National Express takeover offer in favour of a $780m (£594.9m) bid from Inframobility UK Bidco.

Inframobility’s offer is a 37.2% premium to Stagecoach’s closing price on 8 March this year.

It is a 54.3% premium to the closing price of 68.05p for each Stagecoach share on 20 September 2021, prior to the announcement of National Express’ bid.

Network Rail proceeds with Levenmouth Rail Link project

The UK’s Network Rail has commenced the construction of the Levenmouth Rail Link after receiving Transport Scotland’s approval for the $154.11m (£116.6m) project.

As a result, Levenmouth will be able to relaunch passenger services for the first time in over five decades.

Under this project, the old trackbed will be removed, along with other route preparation activities that will take place before the reinstatement of a double-track railway and passenger services to Leven.

Under the plan, hackers put the train system into ‘manual control’ mode, which will ‘significantly slow down the movement of trains, but not create emergency situations.’
